Noted for providing Philip Seymour-Hoffman (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Big Lebowski, The Talented Mr Ripley) with his first leading role, the movie was a cult success in North America. Sadly only going straight to DVD in Europe, it nevertheless had considerable success on the festival circuit here.
Also having wonderful performances from Minnie Driver, John Hurt and Maury Chaykin, the movie was further remarkable for its soundtrack. Scored by Richard Grassby-Lewis and The Insects and featuring trumpet maestro extraordinaire Jon Hassell, the score breaks new ground in potency and poignancy. Both muscular and mature, the Hollywood Reporter, in a search to categorise it, labelled the score 'techno-jazz', which does it some small justice.
The album runs the full gamut of emotions from the highest highs to lowest lows as Dan Mahowny wins and loses in the casinos and in love.
